• Answers to questions:

_They eat a high quality dry cat food for the most part, high in protein and low in fat.  Add in fresh fruits and veggies.
_We  bathe  them in warm water in a sink with our hands, you could use a fingernail brush.
_Everyday we go in and remove feces two, sometimes three times a day.  We clean the cage completely once a week.  That means throw away all old bedding and replace with new.  It also means cleaning the cage with soap and water (some people use bleach diluted) and letting dry completely, whether you do it outside or inside.
_We use aspen bedding.  Do NOT use pine or cedar.  Care Fresh which is recycled cardboard seems to be okay, except that it has somewhat of a smell especially with as many hedgies as I have.
_We cut their toenails once a month with a small pair of scissors or you could use fingernail clippers.
_You can keep more than one, but no males together and no females and males together.  Females tend to get along just fine together.  Hedgies do not get lonely as they are solitary animals in the wild.
_The average life span in captivity is three years.  We currently have  a couple that are older than four years.  Some sites list hedgies being able to live to five or six though.
_There are some good websites, try Hedgehog Welfare Society's page as a starter.  Also good are International Hedgehog Association and  Hedgehog Breeders Association sites as well.   Some websites have false information but start there and there are some links to other good sites.
_Not much smell at all.  Most of the smell would be in the urine and waste.  If you just had one or two hedgies you probably wouldn't notice much of a smell, but with over 25 hedgies, I like to set small dishes of vinegar in the room as it absorbs smell and is more of a natural remedy.  I do NOT use candles or febreeze in the hedgehog's room to cover smell.
_They need exercise and most of that comes from a exercise wheel which is a MUST.  The wheel must have a solid bottom, like the ones we sell here.  They will also run around in Critter Balls and you can let them run in your house supervised.
_Most of them will push those cat balls with bells in them.  They also like toilet paper rolls cut to wear on their heads.  Some of them like little stuffed animals like Ty beanie babies to sleep with.
_Treats such as meal worms, silk worms, wax worms are great and high in protein.  Feed about four a day.  Other things you can add in are canned cat food, scrambled eggs, baby foods, cooked meats with no seasoning.
_All hedgehogs MUST have somewhere to hide.  We refer to these as "hidey places".  Pigloos, sleeping bags, "hats", small mailboxes, PVC elbows all work just fine. You can even make a "hidey place" from an ice cream pail, just cut a good sized door and turn it upside down so that the hedgie can get under it-  we call this "Poor man's Pigloo".
